Rothwell promotes Irish culture and heritage through contemporary fashion, and she creates gloriously colored silk dresses, ties, and scarves, as well as accessories in rich Donegal tweed. The IBO and Emerald Isle Immigration Center (EIIC) are embarking on a collaborative project to provide job seekers in our community with the strategy, mentorship, networking and interview skills that they will need in their search.   EIIC has provided frontline services to the Irish community and many other immigrant communities in New York since 1988, and has grown to be a model non-profit for others to emulate. Members may be interested in attending the Eithne and Paddy Fitzpatrick Memorial Golf Tournament on May 16 in Sleepy Hollow, NY.

The event is a fundraiser for the Eithne and Paddy Memorial Fund, set up by the well-known hotelier John Fitzpatrick in memory of his late parents, Eithne and Paddy. The Memorial Fund works to raise funds in support of a diverse group of worthy organizations across the island of Ireland that focus on a range of much needed initiatives including expanding educational opportunities, helping families and children affected by serious illnesses, delivering social services to the elderly and fostering peace and understanding between people in troubled areas.

IBO and Women's Networking Committee Member Tami Ellen McLaughlin, who is also Executive Director of Sober St Patrick's Day, writes with an update about that event: 

Sober St. Patrick's Day® had a super and soggy day with our first march in the NYC St. Patrick's Day Parade, followed by our Post Parade Celebration at Old St. Patrick's Youth Center, and our second YouTube Premiere for our digital diaspora.

Several IBO members leant their support: Shelley Ann Quilty Lake, Eileen Scully, Carolyn Walsh Parry, Bridget O'Brien; Jim Frawley and Samantha Kelly hosted the in-person party and YouTube Premiere!

Everyone reads The New Yorker for its cartoons. What some might not know is that the magazine has published cartoons drawn by women since the very first issue in 1925.

Liza Donnelly explores these women in her new book, Very Funny Ladies (with foreward by David Remnick and Emma Allen) that celebrates the increase in gender, racial and ethnic diversity among cartoonists today at The New Yorker. Female cartoonists Roz Chast, Amy Hwang, Emily Flake will talk — and laugh — with Liza about their work and the importance of diversity in the field of humor.

IBO Parade Marshal and member Niall O'Leary, an Irish dance instructor, tells us that one of his most talented students will be appearing in this fantastic upcoming show: "One of my most famous dance students, Jake James, currently plays fiddle, bodhran and dances in this show!"

“Sophisticated and commanding” (Los Angeles Times), the Trinity Irish Dance Company (TIDC) is the birthplace of progressive Irish dance, an innovative movement genre that “ushered in a new era for Irish step dance” (Chicago Tribune).

Through a blend of percussive power and aerial grace, TIDC sends a clear message of female empowerment. Their St. Patrick’s Day week run celebrates Founding Artistic Director Mark Howard’s unique vision to fuse vibrant Irish traditions with ever-evolving American innovation. The program features Howard’s classics including Soles, a tribal and timeless rhythmic study; Push, an explosion of virtuosic footwork; and Johnny, the early work that altered the Irish dance landscape. New York City premieres include An Sorcas (The Circus), a colorful comment on the battle between substance and spectacle choreographed by Howard and Associate Artistic Director Chelsea Hoy, and American Traffic, a hybrid of Irish step and American tap that plays at the intersection of rhythmic sensibilities and rebellious histories, choreographed by Michelle Dorrance and Melinda Sullivan.

The Joyce Theater's Health & Safety Protocols

The health and safety of our audience members, artists, and staff are the utmost importance and we are writing to provide updates of our protocols for a safe return to The Joyce.

In accordance with the health and safety guidelines of our local officials, The Joyce Theater will continue to require vaccinations for our staff, audience members, and performers. Masks will continue to be required at all times for visitors inside the theater, until further notice. All visitors are encouraged to consider receiving booster shots, to bolster preventative measures against new variants.

In adherence to this policy, all audience members attending any performance at The Joyce will be asked to show proof of full vaccination status (two weeks following receiving both of a two-dose vaccine or a single dose of a one-dose vaccine), and will be checked upon entering the theater on day of show, either by a front-of-house employee or security staff. 

Under the new vaccine eligibility protocols, children ages 5-11 who have reached full vaccination status (two weeks following receiving a two-dose vaccine) are welcome to attend our performances. Following the guidance of our local officials, we will continue to notify our Joyce patrons of additional details and updates to our visitation policies. 

Audience members must provide proof in one of the following forms: physical immunization card, photo of immunization card, or a digital vaccine card (e.g. regional passes such as Excelsior in NYC) as well as proof of identity (for example: driver's license, non-driver's government issued ID card, passport, school or work ID card). Acceptable proof must show receipt of full COVID-19 vaccination.

The Joyce's policies regarding masks and proof of vaccination will continue to evolve and may be relaxed or extended at a future date. Players was founded by actor Edwin Booth in 1888. Luminary members have included Mark Twain, George M Cohan and hundreds of the most prominent stars of theater, vaudeville and Tin Pan Alley. The building designed by Stanford White is absolutely magnificent and indeed breathtaking in its visual connection with the artistic and cultural life of New York City over the past 130+ years. This event is produced by Players J.C. Mills and Doris Meyer.

It is with great sorrow that the IBO has learned of the passing on Sunday of a former member, Patrick (Páraic) Feeney, in St. Vincent's Hospital in Dublin, having lost his battle with cancer. 

With a career in banking in New York spanning over 20 years, Patrick was an active member of the IBO during his years here, before being posted to Dublin by his employer in 2014.  A native of Glenamaddy, Co. Galway, and Queens resident, the popular Patrick was well-known to many in New York's Irish community, being involved with many social and cultural organizations, especially the New York Irish Center in Long Island City. He will be greatly missed by his many friends and loved ones in New York.
